Our Shelters

A Place of Refuge.
A Community of Compassion.

For refugees and migrants facing uncertainty, finding a safe place to stay can make an important difference.

ALMA’s shelter programs were developed to address the needs of displaced individuals and families, including Muslim refugees who may struggle to find culturally and religiously appropriate accommodations.

Our mission goes beyond temporary housing.

We seek to create welcoming environments where people can access essential resources, maintain their dignity, practice their faith, and connect with community.

As-Sabil — Tijuana, Mexico.

Our Tijuana shelter represents years of compassion, determination, and community effort.

As Muslim refugees and migrants arrived in the region, many faced difficulties finding appropriate accommodations, halal food, prayer facilities, and supportive communities.

Our founder, Sister Sonia Garcia, recognized these challenges through years of humanitarian service. She believed refugees and migrants deserved a welcoming environment where their physical and spiritual needs could be respected.

That vision eventually led to the establishment of the As-Sabil shelter.

a place of refuge

In June 2022, the shelter opened after a former event venue was transformed into a space for humanitarian service.

What had once been a place for celebrations became a place where vulnerable individuals and families could find refuge, assistance, and community.

Why Tijuana matters

Tijuana is located near the U.S.–Mexico border and has long been an important destination for refugees, migrants, and people seeking asylum.

Many arrive after difficult journeys with limited resources and uncertain futures.

As immigration policies change, humanitarian needs continue.

ALMA’s work in Tijuana is not limited to helping people reach another country.

Our mission is to help people find dignity, stability, and opportunities wherever their journey leads.

More than a shelter

As-Sabil was developed to provide more than a place to sleep.

Its facilities have included accommodation, meal preparation, prayer spaces, and areas for community activities. Our broader mission also emphasizes education, practical assistance, and community support.

ALMA — Tapachula, Mexico.

Tapachula, located in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas near the Guatemalan border, is an important location for refugees, migrants, and people seeking protection.

Many individuals arrive after difficult journeys through Central America and other regions.

For some, Tapachula becomes a place where they must navigate unfamiliar systems, find shelter, access essential resources, and make important decisions about their future.

ALMA’s presence in Tapachula reflects our commitment to supporting vulnerable people at different stages of displacement.

Why Tapachula matters

Southern Mexico is an important region for people arriving from Central America and beyond.

Many displaced individuals and families face challenges involving housing, food, employment, transportation, and community support.

Our humanitarian mission seeks to respond to these needs with compassion and dignity.

Building toward stability

We believe humanitarian assistance should address more than immediate survival.

Education, language learning, vocational skills, and supportive relationships can help people prepare for a more stable future.

Our work reflects a commitment to helping vulnerable individuals and families move toward greater independence.

Why Muslim refugee shelters matter

For Someone Who Has Lost Everything, Belonging Means Everything.

Imagine arriving in an unfamiliar country after leaving behind your home, family, and community.

You may not speak the language.

You may have limited financial resources.

You may not know where you will sleep or how you will find your next meal.

Now imagine also struggling to find halal food, a place to pray, or a community that understands your faith.

For Muslim refugees and migrants, these challenges can make an already difficult experience even harder.

We believe refugees should not have to choose between receiving essential assistance and maintaining their religious identity.

ALMA was founded to help address these needs.

Our shelter mission combines humanitarian assistance with respect for religious and cultural practices.

Our Islamic faith inspires our commitment to compassion and service.

And we recognize the dignity of every person who needs help.
