About ALMA

Rooted in Faith.
Driven by Compassion.
Dedicated to Humanity.

Formerly known as the Latina Muslim Foundation, our organization began through a commitment to helping people facing hardship and uncertainty.

ALMA, the American Latino Muslim Foundation, is a Muslim-led humanitarian nonprofit dedicated to supporting refugees, migrants, new Muslims, and underserved communities.

Through years of humanitarian service, our mission grew to include refugee shelters, food assistance, education, vocational training, Islamic education, dawah, and community support.

Our work in Mexico reflects the values that inspired our beginnings: compassion, dignity, faith, and service.

15,000+

Today, ALMA has helped more than 15,000 refugees and displaced people.

Why we became ALMA

A New Name. The Same Heart.

Latina Muslim Foundation

For years, the Latina Muslim Foundation represented faith, compassion, and community service.

As our work expanded, we recognized that our name needed to reflect both our Latino Muslim heritage and the broader communities we serve.

Now

That is why we became ALMA — the American Latino Muslim Foundation.

Our new identity honors where we began while embracing the future we are building together.

Our name has changed, but our values and commitment to serving humanity remain the same.

A Symbol of Faith, Heritage, and Humanity.

Our new visual identity represents the next chapter of our organization’s journey. It reflects our Latino roots, our Muslim identity, and our dedication to humanitarian service.

Just as our name means soul, our logo represents the values and purpose behind our mission.

Meet Our Founder

Meet Sister Sonia Garcia.

Sister Sonia Garcia’s humanitarian journey began through her commitment to helping vulnerable migrants and refugees in Mexico.

Through this work, she recognized the additional challenges faced by Muslim refugees who struggled to find halal food, appropriate prayer facilities, and supportive communities.

She believed something more could be done.

Her story reminds us that meaningful change can begin when one person recognizes a need and decides to act.
Baja California

Raised in Baja California, Mexico, she later embraced Islam and became involved in humanitarian service through the Latina Muslim community.

Around 2014

She began participating in efforts to assist migrants and refugees in Tijuana.

2022

Through years of fundraising, organizing, and community service, her vision helped establish the As-Sabil Muslim refugee shelter in Tijuana.

The mission she helped build continues through ALMA.
